Gavin’s promise
There is no head office here, just me. I measure, fit and check every pair of varifocals myself. If your glasses are not right, come back and I will put them right, free, with no forms and no arguing. I would far rather you told me than put up with them.

What changes the price
The lens design
Everyday, premium and personalised designs differ in how wide the clear areas are. See which varifocal lens is right for you.
Your prescription
Stronger prescriptions may need thinner, lighter lens materials, which cost more.
Coatings and extras
Anti-reflective, driving coatings and Transitions add to the lens price.

Common questions
Varifocal prices, answered
How much are varifocals?
At Winstanley & Son, varifocal lenses start from £205. The final price depends on your prescription, the lens design and the coatings you choose, and frames are priced separately. We give you the exact figure before anything is ordered.
Why do varifocal prices vary so much?
Three things: the lens design (how wide and how personalised the clear areas are), the lens material (thinner lenses for stronger prescriptions cost more), and the coatings, such as anti-reflective, driving or Transitions. The measuring and fitting also matter, and are where cheap varifocals most often go wrong.
Are cheap varifocals worth it?
A basic varifocal that is measured and fitted properly can work well. An expensive one that is measured badly will not. Compare quotes by lens name, design and coatings, and ask who measures and fits them.
Can I spread the cost of varifocals?
Yes. We offer 0% finance over six months, without credit checks. Glasses Club also spreads the cost of eye care and covers damage, from £4.75 a month.
Is the eye test included?
A private eye examination is £45, and it is free on the NHS if you qualify. With our current varifocal offer the eye examination is included whatever your NHS status. See the varifocal offer.
Does the NHS pay for varifocals?
If you are entitled to an NHS optical voucher, it goes towards the cost of varifocals, and you pay the difference. See NHS eye tests and glasses.
What if I cannot get on with them?
We refit them free until they are right. That is part of the price, not an extra.
