Two prices, one examination

£45

Private eye examination. Full sight test and eye health check with our optometrist, and a plain-English explanation at the end. Around 30 minutes, never rushed.

Free

NHS sight test if you qualify: under 16, 16 to 18 in full-time education, 60 or over, diabetic or glaucoma patients, or on qualifying benefits. Same test, the NHS pays. We check your entitlement for you.

What the £45 actually buys

Your sight

Distance, reading and everything between, measured properly. If you wear varifocals we look at how the current pair is working, not just the numbers.

Your eye health

The front and back of each eye, and pressures where indicated. Cataract, glaucoma and macular changes are usually spotted here first.

A plain-English answer

What we found, what it means, and what, if anything, to do about it. Referral to a specialist if it is needed. No add-ons, no upsell.

What people say about the test

★★★★★

“I’ve never been a fan of the big high street chains where you feel like just another number being pushed through the system. Winstanley was the complete opposite. The turnaround on my glasses was far faster than I expected, without compromising on quality.”

★★★★★

“For the first time in many years I have a pair of glasses that fit my face, look nice and do the job of helping me see properly. I was seen as a person, not just a customer.”

Common questions

Eye test cost, answered

How much is a private eye test in Liverpool?

£45 at Winstanley & Son. That covers the full examination: sight test, eye health check inside and out, pressure check where indicated, and a plain-English explanation of what we found.

Who gets a free NHS eye test?

Under 16s, 16 to 18s in full-time education, anyone 60 or over, people with diabetes or glaucoma, close relatives of glaucoma patients aged 40 or over, registered blind or partially sighted people, and anyone on qualifying benefits or with a valid HC2 certificate. We check your entitlement when you book.

Is the NHS test a lesser test?

No. Same optometrist, same equipment, same time. The NHS pays the fee instead of you.

How often should I have one?

Usually every two years. Some people, for example children, people with diabetes and some people over 70, need one every year; your optometrist tells you which applies to you, and sooner if anything changes. See how often you should have an eye test.

Do you charge for extra checks?

No. If anything needs a specialist opinion we refer you, we do not sell you an add-on.
