Your options
Polarised
Cuts reflected glare from water, wet roads and car bonnets. The best choice for driving in bright sun, fishing, boating and holidays.
Tinted
A solid or graduated tint in grey, brown or green, in the darkness you want. Very dark tints are not suitable for driving.
Light-reactive
If you would rather not carry two pairs, Transitions go dark outside and clear indoors; XTRActive also darkens in the car.
Varifocal sunglasses
If you wear varifocals, your sunglasses can be varifocals too, measured and fitted the same way as your everyday pair, on the Essilor Visioffice X. That means you can read a menu, a map or your phone in the sun without taking them off. See varifocals.
Sun at dusk, or driving at night? Take them off: no sunglasses are suitable for night driving. See glasses for night driving.
Common questions
Prescription sunglasses, answered
Can I get prescription sunglasses?
Yes. We make prescription sunglasses in single vision and varifocal, in a frame you choose from us or your own sunglasses frame if it can take prescription lenses.
Can I have varifocal sunglasses?
Yes. Varifocal sun lenses let you see the road, a map and your phone without swapping glasses.
Polarised or tinted?
Polarised lenses cut the glare bouncing off water, wet roads and car bonnets, and are the best choice for driving in sun and for being near water. A plain tint is fine for general use. Essilor Xperio polarised and Nikon polarised lenses are both available.
Are Transitions a replacement for sunglasses?
For many people, Transitions XTRActive gets close: clear indoors, dark outdoors, and it also darkens in the car. If you want the darkest lens and full polarisation outdoors, dedicated sunglasses are still better. See Transitions.
Can I drive in prescription sunglasses?
Yes, in daylight, with a tint suitable for driving. Very dark lenses are not suitable for driving, and no sunglasses should be worn at dusk or at night.
Do prescription sunglasses protect against UV?
Good sun lenses do, and the Essilor and Nikon sun lenses we fit include UV protection. We confirm it for the exact lens you choose.
