Thorough, then honest
Book online or by text
Pick a time that suits. If you qualify for an NHS sight test, it is free. Tell us if you have a particular problem so we allow time for it.
The examination
Our optometrist checks your vision, your prescription and the health of your eyes, inside and out. Patients call it “very comprehensive and thorough”, with a “cracking sense of humour”.
Your results, explained
You leave understanding what was found and what, if anything, you need. We advise on the options; the choice is always yours.
Why locals choose us over a chain
Familiar faces
You are looked after by the same small team every visit, not a different face each time. We get to know your eyes and your history, and everything is explained in plain English.
Honest advice
We explain the options and what each one does. You decide what is right for you, with no hard sell.
Never double-booked
Appointments are spaced properly, so your test is not squeezed to hit a daily quota. Around 30 minutes, unhurried.

Seen as a person, not a number
“I had no idea that a greater field of vision than my existing lenses was even an option, or that technology to measure my frame and lenses to fit so accurately existed.”
“For the first time in many years I have a pair of glasses that fit my face, look nice and do the job of helping me see properly. I was seen as a person, not just a customer.”
“Gavin repaired my severely damaged glasses after I sat on them. He saved the day, I was able to drive the following day for an important assessment.”

Where can I get an eye test in south Liverpool?
At Winstanley & Son, 252 Park Road, Dingle, Liverpool L8 4UE, opposite Tesco Extra, with free parking outside. We are five minutes from Toxteth and Aigburth, and about ten from the city centre. Private eye tests, or free on the NHS if you qualify, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Book online or call 0151 726 0622.
How much is an eye test?
A private eye examination is £45. NHS sight tests are free if you qualify, and we check your entitlement for you. If you're buying varifocals this month, the examination is free with the varifocal offer, whether or not you qualify for the NHS.
Am I entitled to a free NHS eye test?
You are if you are over 60, under 16 (or under 19 in full-time education), diabetic, have glaucoma or a close relative with it, are registered blind or partially sighted, or receive certain benefits. We will check for you.
How long does the examination take?
Allow around 30 minutes. We do not rush it.
What does the eye test check?
Your vision and prescription, the health of the front and back of your eyes, eye pressure where appropriate, and how your eyes work together. You get a clear explanation, not a sales pitch.
Do I have to buy glasses from you?
No. We advise, you choose. Most people stay because of the fitting and the frames.
Why choose an independent optician over a chain?
You see familiar faces every visit, not whoever happens to be on shift, and everything is explained in plain English. We advise you on the options and the choice is always yours. Patients often tell us it feels like being looked after, not processed.
What happens if you find a problem with my eyes?
We explain what we have seen, in plain English, and what the options are. Some things are simply monitored at your next test; anything that needs a specialist gets a clear referral. Either way, you leave knowing exactly where things stand.
How is your eye test different from a chain optician?
You see familiar faces every time, not whoever is on shift, and everything is explained in plain English. We advise you on what is right for your eyes and leave the choice to you, and appointments are never double-booked to hit a daily number. Most people notice the difference in how unrushed it feels.
Can I get a same-day or walk-in eye test?
Booked appointments get proper time, so please book online or by text where you can. If something has changed suddenly with your vision, call us and we will always try to fit you in the same day.
