Why give up to £497 away?
Because most varifocal problems come from compromise
Compromise on the lens design. Compromise on the coatings. Compromise on the measurements. Then people decide varifocals just don’t work for them.
They work extremely well when they’re done properly. So instead of selling a cheap entry-level lens and hoping, we include the upgrades that actually make the difference: wider usable vision, less edge distortion, clearer night driving, less screen fatigue, easier adaptation.
Fewer problems for you, and a reputation we keep. A large share of our 213 five-star reviews come from people who had been told they “couldn’t get on with varifocals”.
Proof
Lucy struggled with varifocals for three years
She travelled from Southport to us. She now calls her vision “life changing”, like “new HD vision”. Seventy seconds, in her own words.
“My first pair of varifocals, and I knew they specialised in them. I chose the bespoke frames and I absolutely love them. They were worth every penny.”
“I decided to go for the Nikon lens and the difference is like night and day compared to my five-month-old lenses from a well known high street chain.”
“I had no idea that a greater field of vision than my existing lenses was even an option, or that technology to measure my frame and lenses to fit so accurately existed.”
“Their technology to get your prescription spot on is like something from the future. No pushy suggestions to upgrade. Frames to suit every budget, and 0% payment plans without credit checks.”

Are you wearing the wrong design of varifocal?
There are hundreds of varifocal designs. One size never fits all. Gavin, Andrea and Lynn narrow them to the top three for how you actually use your eyes: reading, screens, driving, work. Then we measure the fitting position on your face, in your frame, with the Essilor Visioffice X. Not a felt-tip pen and a ruler.
Two people with the same prescription can have completely different varifocal experiences. The difference is millimetres. We don’t rush that part.
See how the Essilor Visioffice X measures you
Essilor’s own film of the Visioffice X range: the digital measuring column we use on every pair of varifocals. Why we use it instead of a felt-tip pen.
If they don’t feel right, come back. As often as you need.
Varifocals should feel natural. If anything feels off once you are wearing them, come back and we refit and adjust them free of charge, as many times as it takes. That is what fitting properly means.
How it works
Book your free eye test
Our optometrist examines your eyes and how you use them: reading, screens, driving, hobbies. That decides the lens design, not a price list.
Measured to you, in your frame
The Essilor Visioffice X measures your pupils, the frame position and the angle on your face to a fraction of a millimetre. Stock, designer or a frame made by hand for you.
Collected and fitted by Gavin
We fit the finished glasses, adjust them on your face and show you how to use them. Come back as often as you like for adjustments.

Common questions
Varifocals, answered
What exactly is included?
Six lens upgrades on every pair of varifocals ordered this month: Transitions XTRActive light-reactive lenses, premium drive anti-glare with 100% UV protection, anti-scratch treatment, blue light protection, thinner and lighter lenses all the way up to 1.74, the thinnest possible, at no extra charge, and your eye examination. Together they are worth up to £497, depending on how thin your prescription needs the lenses to be, and you pay nothing for them.
Why Transitions XTRActive?
Most light-reactive lenses only react to UV light, and a car windscreen blocks most UV, so they stay clear while you drive. Transitions XTRActive also reacts to visible light, so it darkens behind the windscreen as well as outdoors, and it is darker outside than standard light-reactive lenses. Indoors it is almost clear, with a very light tint. More on the Transitions range.
So what do I pay for?
The frame and the varifocal lens itself. Those two things set the price, and we give you the figure before anything is ordered. The up to £497 is the value of the upgrades, not the price of the glasses.
What might cost extra?
Nothing that we do not tell you about first. Thinner lenses are included all the way up to 1.74, the thinnest possible, this month. If you choose a designer frame or a premium lens design, that changes the quoted price and we say so at the time. There are no add-ons at collection.
Can I use a prescription from another optician?
Yes, if it is less than two years old. Most people still take the eye examination, because it is included free this month and it is where we learn how you actually use your eyes, which decides the lens design.
What happens at the appointment?
A 30-minute slot. Our optometrist examines your eyes and asks how you use them: reading, screens, driving, hobbies. You choose a frame, we measure the fitting position on your face with the Essilor Visioffice X, and you leave with a clear price. You decide when you're ready.
Can I bring my own frames to be reglazed?
Usually, yes, if it is in good condition. Bring it in and we will tell you straight away. More on reglazing.
Do you accept NHS patients?
Yes. We see private and NHS patients. If you qualify for an NHS sight test, for example if you are over 60 or receive certain benefits, your eye examination is free.
Does this offer run all the time?
No. It is limited to 100 pairs and ends 31 October 2026.
What if my varifocals don’t feel right?
Come back. We refit and adjust them free of charge, as many times as it takes. Most problems are a millimetre or two of fitting, and we fix that on your face.
Do you stock designer frames?
Yes. We stock the major brands including Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani and Ray-Ban, alongside our own handmade frames.
How much are your varifocals?
Varifocal lenses from £205 this month, with all six advertised upgrades, worth up to £497, plus your eye examination included. Frames are priced separately. Your prescription and lens design set the exact lens price, and we give you the figure before anything is ordered.
How do your prices compare with other practices?
We work hard with all the different lens manufacturers to make sure you are never overpaying, so you get the same quality lenses without the high street mark-up.
